To join the United Way Women’s Initiative, you need to ante up $10,000 a year. So the members of this high-powered group of 75 women from central Maryland—who support United Way agencies such at the House of Ruth—were surprised when they learned that one of their newest members, Respira Medical founder and president Maria Welch, was once a battered wife herself who had turned to the House of Ruth for support and legal counsel.
